The eyes of the Egyptians will go to Tokyo on Saturday to follow the expected match between the Pharaohs team and their Brazilian counterpart, in the quarter-finals of football competitions at the Olympics.
The confrontation is the third between the two teams in the history of the Olympic Games, after the first in Tokyo in 1964, which ended in a 1-1 draw, and the second in the London edition of 2012, where Egypt lost 2- 3.
In preparation for the Olympic Games in course, the Pharaohs faced the “samba dancers” in a friendly match, and the match ended with the Egyptians winning by two goals to one.
Nigeria and Argentina – Atlanta 1996
After the historic victory over Brazil in the semifinals of the 1996 Olympics, the Nigerian team was preparing to face in the Argentine counterpart in the final, hoping to win the first African gold in football.
Nigeria had a golden generation of players, led by Nwankwo Kanu and Gigi Okocha, while leading “Tango Dancers” top scorer Hernan Crespo in this edition with 6 goals.

And a few seconds before the end, former Egyptian Zamalek striker Emmanuel Amuneki fired a coup de grace at the Latin team by scoring a fatal goal, the most famous for African teams at the Olympics, announcing that he had won the medal. Olympic gold for the first time in the history of Africa in football competitions.
Cameroon and Spain – Sydney 2000
The 2000 Olympics saw a second football gold for Africa, after Cameroon beat Spain in the final in one of the most important matches of this global sporting event.
The Spanish team managed to close the first half with a score of two goals a zero.
But in the second half, Cameroon managed to score two goals to adjust the result and regain the hope of winning the gold, led by the terrible duo Patrick Mboma and Samuel Eto’o.
With the draw still in extra time, the two teams resorted to penalties that smiled at Cameroon to win the gold medal.
Nigeria and Japan – Rio de Janeiro 2016
The Nigerian team won the bronze medal in the last edition of the Olympics, but the “Eagles” match against Japan during their career remains one of the most important games of the Olympics in its history, as it has seen 9 goals.
It is interesting to note that the draw of that edition led to the presence of the Nigerian national team, accompanied by the teams of Japan, Sweden and Colombia.
In the first round of the group stage, Nigeria faced Japan and the first half ended with the African team going three to two goals.
In the second half, Nigeria managed to score two more goals, but Japan presented a distinguished performance and also scored two goals, finishing the football marathon with a score of 5-4 in favor of Nigeria.
Nigeria is in lead the group, facing Denmark in the quarter-finals and beating them with a clear double.
In the semi-final matches, Germany stopped the Nigerian team’s march by defeating them with two clean goals, but in the match to determine the bronze medal, Nigeria defeated Honduras 3-2.
