Berlin Brandenburg Airport said Thursday it had closed its runways after several people entered them illegally, while a climate change group said its activists had barricaded themselves on the runway.
Environmental group (Last Generation) said activists had called on people to stop travelling in plane and also called on the government to stop subsidizing this type of travel.
For its part, the Berlin police wrote on Twitter, saying: “In an area of the airport not open to the public, we found several people who in had previously managed to enter illegally, and some were stuck” on the ground.
An airport spokesman said police arrested the activists but the runways were closed in so that the staff could check that there were no more people.
The spokesman could not specify the number of damaged flights, according to Reuters.
In a similar incident on the 6th of this month, climate activists stormed runways and stopped planes before taking off at Schiphol Airport in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, to denounce the effects of air emissions.
Climate activist groups have staged a series of similar protests in recent weeks, with activists trying to latch onto the glass covering Girl with a Pearl Earring and others hurling soup at Van Gogh’s ‘Sower’ in Rome and elsewhere. one of his sunflowers in London.
