Bernie Ecclestone defends daughter for jetting to her sixth country during Covid pandemic

Billionaire and former Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone, 90, has defended his daughter Tamara Ecclestone, 36, as she recently jetted to her sixth country during the coronavirus pandemic. Tamara and husband Jay Rutand’s, 40, Instagram accounts both showed their family enjoying the Easter weekend in Beverly Hills with their children Sophia, seven and Serena, six months, after visiting the Maldives last month.

The billionaire defended his daughter’s decision to travel between countries and claimed that she had not broken any laws by doing so.

Bernie said: “They have been travelling around a lot but they’ve 100 per cent broken no laws by doing so.

“They both have a home in Switzerland for a start so are residents.”

He went on to explain that the family had left Switzerland as it became “very cold” and they decided to jet to a warmer climate.

Speaking to MailOnline, Bernie continued: “I think, in Tamara and Jay’s case, they left Switzerland to go somewhere warm because it had been snowing and was very cold in Gstaad.”

Most recently the heiress shared a picture of herself with her youngest daughter enjoying a sweet treat at an ice cream parlour based in Santa Monica.

America is the sixth country that Tamara and her family have travelled to since the start of the pandemic.

Last June, the family flew to Croatia to spend the summer on their father’s £28 million yacht, before heading to Gstaad in Switzerland and London at the end of the year.

A month later, they jetted off to Dubai before heading to the Maldives last month and then visiting the USA.

Continuing to address his daughter’s jet set lifestyle, the father of the three insisted that the only reason Tamara flew to LA was to visit her older sister.

“They have now gone to California purely to see Petra, who has moved there,” he explained.

Referencing the Maldives trip last month, the Formula One mogul said that Tamara and Jay went on the exotic destination holiday as they “did not want to lose” their deposit which they had put down for the trip.

Bernie said: “They went to Dubai and from there they disappeared to the Maldives, since they already had a trip there booked for some time and it was easier to fly straight there from Dubai so they didn’t have to break any rules.

Bernie said: “They went to Dubai and from there they disappeared to the Maldives, since they already had a trip there booked for some time and it was easier to fly straight there from Dubai so they didn’t have to break any rules.

“It was nice and simple, plus the airline tickets at the time were cheaper.”

Following a break in at their Kensington mansion in 2019, the socialite announced that she has “no plans” to return to the UK capital.

Speaking about their London base, Bernie added that he wasn’t sure what the power couple were planning to do yet.

Addressing the social media backlash following her visit to Croatia last year, Tamara took to Instagram to defend herself, explaining that she made the decision as she is “half-Croatian.”

She wrote: “Clearly this virus hasn’t changed some people for the better which is a bit of a shame. For those of you that are confused or just bitter.

“I didn’t leave the house at all during lockdown… I didn’t even go to the park or exercise.

“I am half-Croatian so decided it would be best, safest to come here, which is not forbidden and I am now following the rules in Croatia.

“As for the home school questions, a return to school was option…”(sic)

The mum-of-two continued: “If I am not mistaken no one is obliged to follow me so you know what to do.”
