Sunbasket not only has the best meal kits, but they’re some of the best for you as well. Many people love meal kits that are healthy and fresh, but Sunbasket takes things a step further by including a lot of organic, non-GMO, sustainably, and responsibly raised food. This is how it works: The box takes you to the farmer’s market, so you don’t have to. The thoughtful meals are both tasty and exciting. The best meal kit services test found that Sunbasket came out on top, so it is the best.
Sunbasket’s recipes are made by Justine Kelly, a chef in San Francisco who worked at the James Beard Award-winning Slanted Door restaurant. Her work shows in the food. Nutritionists like many of Sunbasket’s tasty and straightforward organic food recipes because they have 500 to 800 calories in each serving. Most of the recipes take less than 30 minutes to make.
The meal kit service gives you options for these nutritious meals, too — you’ll be able to choose from a selection of six to 18 different organic meal recipes each week, including paleo, vegan meal, vegetarian and gluten-free meals, so you’ll always get what you want. Sunbasket delivery is available in 36 states, and shipments arrive on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.
Beyond the great meal kits, Sunbakset offers premade “Fresh and Ready” meals ($9 per meal). There’s also an enormous market of grocery items that can be added to your weekly order, including meats, fish, cheese, snacks, breakfast foods, and more. See how much we loved the meal delivery service in our full review of Sunbasket.
Subscription : For three Sunbasket meals a week, you’ll pay $74.93 for the two-person plan and $143.87 for the four-person plan, with a $5.99 shipping fee either way.
Home Chef has more meal kits to choose from than any other service, including oven-ready meals and one-pan dinners. They also have more than any other service. I tried Home Chef for myself and loved how much you can change your meals from week to week. For example, you can change the protein in your meals from chicken to pork or fish, or you can double the protein if you’re feeling extra meaty. if you want more leftovers for lunches and snacks, you can even double the size of an entire meal. If you’re planning to have a party the next week or just want more leftovers for lunches and snacks, you can do this.
There are a lot of things that make Home Chef stand out from the rest. It’s also possible to order meat that isn’t treated with antibiotics from the meal delivery service, or to add plant-based meats like Impossible Beef instead of regular meat. Meal kits, recipes, and ingredients aren’t very different from one another (which is what keeps Home Chef an efficient meal delivery kit for the masses). Chipotle Chimichurri Mini Pork Meatloaves with Roasted Sweet Potato and Garlic Peppercorn Salmon Scampi with Garlic Cream Gemelli and Broccolini are two examples of meal kits that come with everything you need to make them.
Oven-ready meals are a new and unique service from the meal delivery service. They come with everything you need to make the meal, including a cooking tray (no messy kitchen and no dishes). See an oven-ready meal from Home Chef here.
Subscription: Starting at $7.99 per serving, Home Chef recipes can be bought at the market price.
A few meal kit service options send fully cooked, ready-to-eat meals right to your door. There are healthy, tasty comfort foods like peppercorn steak and penne bolognese that you can make yourself if you want to eat well. The ready-to-cook meals are made right before they are delivered and never frozen. It’s like having Mom cook dinner for you in your kitchen without having Mom live with you. It’s my fault. Please read our full review of Freshly to learn more about the company that delivers ready-made meals.
Subscription: $8.99 to $12.50 per serving, with up to 12 servings a week, and up to 12 servings a week. It doesn’t cost anything to ship.
EveryPlate is the best cheap meal kit service I’ve tried because it costs just $5 per serving, and it focuses on hearty, tasty meals and big portions. If you sign up for the service, you can get even better deals. It costs less to run EveryPlate because it only has eight easy meal kit recipes to choose from each week, which mostly excludes vegetarians and people who have special dietary needs. But the eight available meals are full of variety and flavor anyway.
You can expect things like meatloaf, burgers, and pasta dishes to come from this meal delivery service. Everything I made was good, though, so I think it’s worth the money. You can get 18 meals for just $3.33 each, and you get free shipping on your first order. This is the best part. You’ll also be able to skip or cancel at any time. To find out how much I liked the cheap meal kit service, read this review.
Subscription: Each serving is only $4.99. Each weekly box includes three recipes with either two or four servings apiece. Snag a sign-up offer and get meals starting as low as $2 per serving.
Blue Apron is widely thought to be the first meal kit delivery service in the United States. The eight weekly menu choices are simple pasta and tasty international dishes and seafood, and a vegetarian option that always comes with the meal. Even the most simple recipes might have a new ingredient or two on the recipe card. The website often highlights these ingredients as a way to teach people about them.
Recipes are tagged with words like “customer favorite,” “easy,” “great for grilling,” and so on. Promotions from time to time include a menu from guest celebrity chefs or recipes that show off popular travel destinations. There is also an option to get wine pairings, and Blue Apron is always coming out with new menus for big food holidays like the Super Bowl and Thanksgiving.
See how Blue Apron and HelloFresh stack up against each other in our head-to-head review of the two popular meal delivery services. You can also read my full review of the original meal kit service and see how it stood up in 2021.
Subscription: Price per serving ranges from $7.49 to $9.99, with options to prepare two to four recipes per week and two or four servings per recipe.
There are a lot of things that Gobble does to speed up its meal delivery service, like pre-chopping and pre-cooking many of the ingredients. This means that all recipes take 15 minutes or less to make. It doesn’t matter that this food kit delivery service is called “fast food.” Each menu from this service has a sophisticated and worldly feel. From the Range, From the Ranch, From the Sea, and From the Earth are the options for each week. Tofu pad Thai and cilantro pesto salmon were two of the big hits when I tried Gobble’s meal kits. When I tried them, they were hit or miss. This isn’t the only thing you can do to your recipes. You can also change things like fish or steak for chicken, or you can pay more for organic meat.
Subscription: A lot of the Gobble meal kits cost $12 per serving, and there aren’t any complicated plans or prices. You can choose recipes for two to four servings of two or three (or more) recipes, but the hard part is over. With all the preparation Gobble does for you, it is a good choice for someone who wants to spend less time cooking and more time eating.
All about making the customer happy, no matter how picky they are. HelloFresh is all about that. While you won’t find high-end, gourmet food, the food is all very good, and the brand makes it easy for people with special dietary needs by labeling each recipe. With HelloFresh, you can easily find recipes that are free of dairy, gluten, soy, nuts, and more. It also makes it easy to stay on a diet like a keto or paleo, with a blender.
HelloFresh’s portions are also big, and it’s a good deal if you order food for a family. Unique: A “dinner to lunch” element gives the home cook a different way to make tonight’s dinner so it can be a tasty lunch tomorrow. hello fresh also has many recipes, so it should be easy to find something everyone will like. Plus, they’ll let you make changes. In this full review of HelloFresh, we talk about how easy and flexible the meal kit service is.
Subscription: A serving costs between $7.50 and $10, and you can choose from two to four recipes a week and two or four servings per recipe. You can also choose Classic, Veggie, or Family plans.
Green Chef is one of the more expensive options, but we like it because it can be used for many different types of diets. As a bonus, the healthy meal kit service also has the most organic ingredients of any meal kit service. This includes everything from produce to meat and fish. This isn’t all Green Chef has to offer. They also have gluten-free meal kits and recipes for gluten-free meals. Green Chef has a plan for everyone, no matter what kind of diet they’re on for health or personal reasons. If eating organic food is important to them, they’ll be able to find a plan that works for them, as well.
Green Chef is one of the most flexible meal kit delivery services because it has so many different diet plan options. This also makes it one of the best because you get a lot of different tasty menu options each week. This is what I thought about a week’s worth of Green Chef meals. Some of the recipes were better than others, but you could tell that the organic ingredients were better.
Subscription: It costs $12-$13 per serving for three meals per week for a two-person Green Chef subscription. It costs $11 per serving for a four-person Green Chef subscription for two meals a week.
In the end, Purple Carrot came out on top because all of their meal kits are 100% plant-based, so it’s not surprising that they took the top spot.
Purple Carrot takes its plant-based recipes very seriously. The goal is to help you make healthy and tasty dinners the old-fashioned way, by using fresh vegetables, grains, legumes, and other whole foods that you can buy at the store. A service like HelloFresh might be better if you’re new to veganism and only want plant-based or fake meat products like Impossible Beef that looks like real meat.
It’s about eight recipes a week. I tried a whole week’s worth of food, which you can read about in my full Purple Carrot review here. I liked everything I ate. Purple Carrot is the best vegan meal kit I’ve tried. It gave me the most knowledge and practice in cooking vegan food and its main ingredients, like lentils and grains. As a result of Purple Carrot, I learned about some new sauces and condiments, like cashew cream and other nut-based “dairy” foods.
There might be lemon-braised chickpeas with rosemary and cashew cheese, green curry lentils with brown rice, and broccoli and cheese soup with miso garlic croutons on a sample menu. Add-ons for breakfast meal kits start at $6 per serving, and they can go up from there.
Subscription: Purple Carrot meals cost between $9 and $12 per serving, depending on how many servings you get in each meal and how many meals you buy at a time. About $72 will buy two people a box of three meals a week. It doesn’t cost anything to ship.
