US President Biden Discusses F-16s and Swedish NATO Membership with Turkish President Erdogan
On Monday, US President Joe Biden spoke with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the phone and discussed various issues related to bilateral relations and global challenges.
F-16 Fighters and Swedish NATO Membership
During the phone call, Erdogan raised the question of the possibility of the United States selling F-16 fighters to Turkey, while Biden asked for Turkey’s approval of Sweden’s accession to NATO. Biden said, “We’ll talk more about it (Sweden’s NATO membership) next week.”
Ankara has refused to accept Sweden’s NATO membership because of its presence in Sweden of Kurdish elements who violently criticize the Turkish president.
Congratulating Erdogan’s Re-election
The Turkish presidency announced that President Biden had congratulated Erdogan on his re-election to a new term, without revealing the details of the call that Biden spoke about.
According to the statement, “President Biden called President Erdogan and congratulated him on his re-election as president, expressing hope that the presidential election results will meet the aspirations of the Turkish people.
The statement emphasized that the two presidents discussed regional and global challenges and indicated that the relations between the two countries have become more important in light of these challenges, and they agreed to develop bilateral relations in all fields.
