Biden targets oil and gas industry with methane emissions plan to fight climate change

Continental Resources Executive Chairman and Founder Discuss the Impact of the Biden Administration on the oil industry, natural gas demand, and the absence of Russia and China at the climate summit and Election Day.

On Tuesday, the Biden administration unveiled its action plan to reduce methane emissions as President Biden addressed a global audience at the COP26 climate meeting in Glasgow, Scotland.

The plan reflects Biden’s philosophy of shifting to more climate-friendly energy in a way that he believes will produce new jobs and innovations.

“This new set of actions rest on a deep technical and scientific understanding of methane emissions, their sources and mitigation options. And they are taking advantage of the growing momentum,” a White House said document that details the plan says. “In recent years, federal, state and local agencies as well as private sector leaders have started met a number of of common sense regulatory and voluntary efforts to reduce methane emissions, while supporting innovation in next-generation technologies detect and reduce methane emissions over the economy.”

The primary area that the plan aims to reduce methane emissions is the oil and gas sector, which the administration says is “the largest industrial resource” of methane emissions in the United States.”

To do this, the Environmental Protection Agency will propose new guidelines and standards under the Clean Air Act. This would include updated standards for detecting and repairing leaking and moving by current pneumatic controllers to use: zero-emissions technology.

In addition, the Department of the interior plans to tackle “lavish venting and flaring” of gas during drilling operations” and well leaks. The Department of transport would also get involved and tackle leaks in oil and gas pipelines, as well as liquefied natural gas storage facilities and underground natural gas storage.

The administration is also watching to reduce landfill emissions by cutting food waste met 50% by 2030 and reducing emissions of abandoned coal mines.

The action plan also belts working with farmers and ranchers to reduce methane emissions by using new equipment and practices related to manure management. The Department of Agriculture will also launch a public-private to encourage collaboration “onfarm” renewable energy.

At a methane event Tuesday morning, Biden did not emphasize the need to take these actions but what he believes is a chance to turn the global economy in An direction that will create new jobs.

“This is not just something we must do to protect the environment and our future, it’s a huge opportunity for all of us, all of our nations to create jobs and make climate goals a core component of U.S global economic recovery too,” Biden said.
