Biden warns: Cyber attacks could lead to real war

In comments highlighting what Washington sees as growing threats from Russia and China, US President Joe Biden warned that a major cyber attack on his country could lead to a real war with a great power.

Biden clarified on Tuesday in a half-hour speech that believed that if a “real war with the major powers” broke out, it would most likely be “the result of a hack with catastrophic consequences.”

Cyber security is in top of the Biden administration’s agenda after a series of high-profile attacks on entities including network management company Solarwinds, pipeline company Colonial Pipeline and meat processing company JBS.

In addition, these attacks have caused severe damage to the United States and some attacks have affected fuel and food supplies in some parts of the country.

Based in Russia

And the results of an investigation conducted by the security authorities in America on the 16th of this month, revealed that behind most of these attacks is the REvil group, which is widely believed to be linked to Russia but without prove conclusive.

Additionally, a Forbes magazine report indicated that the attacks behind the group included giant companies such as Quanta Computer and Acer, as well as the Invenergy company, which included a blackmail operation by the company’s president using hacked personal files.

Last month, Chicago-based Invenergy was hit by a ransomware attack in one moment in which the hacker group has threatened to disclose sensitive and critical information relating to company CEO Michael Polsky, the Financial Times reported.

Biden isn’t sure

On the 4th of this month, Joe Biden said the US government’s “main belief” was that Russian hackers did not participate in a cyber attack with ransom programs that targeted hundreds of American and Swedish institutions.

He also made it clear at the time that he instructed US intelligence agencies to conduct an investigation into the source of the attack.

Interestingly, cyberattacks were the focus of the first meeting between US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Geneva last month.
