Big changes for the New World from Amazon

Amazon Game Studio has released a new trailer for its multiplayer co-op survival game New World at The Game Awards. It looks like there have been big changes since the last game.

New World is a team-based survival game between players and environments with elements of exploration, resource exploitation and expansion. I become part of a guild that creates a new culture and arrives on the shores of a foreign island. I work with teammates to gather resources, make tools and build a base. Together, we try to destroy other bases and survive attacks from those already on the island.

Already in February, Amazon showed the game to reporters. We found that while it looked and performed well, some of its themes were openly imperialistic, with a focus on colonists exterminating the inhabitants of a “new” country. Today’s trailer shows a much more imaginative story that seems to be avoiding the quasi-historical background.

The settler now seems more like a fantasy warrior than a 17th century colonist. More clarity is given to the fact that the already on the island enemies are former settlers from earlier eras, which were corrupted by the power of the country. There’s a lot more variety in the monsters than in the generic zombies we saw earlier this year.

New World will be released on a Windows PC in May. In the coming weeks we will learn more about this game.
