Britain seizes contraband Iranian weapons

Today, the British government revealed that the Royal Navy had seized contraband Iranian missiles in southern Iran’s international waters.

The British Ministry of Defense said in a statement that in early 2022, while conducting routine maritime security operations, HMS Montrose seized Iranian weapons aboard smuggler-operated speedboats in international waters south of Iran.

Commenting on the operation, British Armed Forces Minister James Hebei stressed that his country is committed to upholding international law, resisting aggression in Europe and to ban illegal arms shipments that perpetuate instability in Middle East.

He also said his country will continue to work to support one pace lasting in Yemen and is committed to international maritime security in so that commercial ships can transit in security without any threat of interruption.

Weapons seized included surface-to-air missiles and cruise missile engines for ground attacks, in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216 (2015).
