Britney Spears 'under conservatorship because she has dementia', dad claims in court docs

Britney Spears’ dad Jamie Spears has claimed the Toxic hitmaker has dementia. Jamie, 68, put the health condition on court documents for her conservatorship to justify having control over his 39-year-old daughter’s finances.

The documents emerged during new BBC documentary, The Battle for Britney: Fans, Cash and a Conservatorship.

The film discusses the forms that explain the purpose of Britney’s conservatorship, which the singer was placed under in February 2008.

Journalist Mobeen Azhar said from the unearthed documents he’d seen, Jamie had ticked a box saying it related to “dementia placement or treatment”.

The journalist admitted he initially wondered whether the dementia claims were a “conspiracy theory”, as they had been circulated on fan sites.

He adds: “There’s only two options with that. Britney might have dementia.

“Now I’m not a doctor but if that’s the case, then the world isn’t aware of that. But the other option is actually more sinister.

“That’s the idea that she doesn’t have dementia but the conservatorship team have suggested that she has because they want to push the conservatorship through.

“And if that’s the case, then that’s terrifying.”

Under-65-year-olds account for less than 5 per cent of dementia cases in the US.

As a result, Azhar claims it is “unlikely” Britney is battling the condition, unless she is a “medical anomaly”.

Jamie declined to comment on the allegations made in the documentary.

However, the dad-of-three has previously declared he is working to look after his pop star daughter’s best interests and is dedicated to “protecting her”.

After the explosive court documents were unearthed in the documentary, fans have hit back at claims Britney has a brain condition.

One social media user fumed: “Dementia patients do not go on world tours.”

During her conservatorship, Britney has released four albums, embarked on four global tours and performed 248 concerts in Las Vegas.

Britney fan Hayley Herms, who is part of the Free Britney movement, said: “There is no way any dementia patient is going on world tours, doing Vegas residencies, is learning 27 back-to-back combo numbers, full choreography. No honey, that is not happening.”

The movement supported by the singer’s huge fanbase aims to put an end to her dad’s control over her finances, business and personal life.

In 2007, Britney had a breakdown after splitting from her ex-husband, Kevin Federline.

The star went on to lose custody of her sons Jayden, 14, and Sean, 15, and was detained for 14 days for her own safety.

Britney was then placed under the conservatorship, which prevents her from driving, going out alone or making her own financial decisions.

The Battle for Britney: Fans, Cash and a Conservatorship is on BBC iPlayer now and will be on BBC Two on Wednesday at 9pm.
