Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians was non-binding on Jameis Winston, who was the team’s general manager after 2019.
Winston’s pioneering contract ends at the end of the season and the future of the 25-year-old in Tampa Bay is in the air.
In 12 appearances this season, Winston, who was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, has accumulated 20 interceptions and 22 touchdowns for the Buccaneers (5-7). Winston’s suffering has been highlighted in five tackles against the Panthers in Week 6 and has since dropped 10 more selections in five games.
Asked if he would back Winston if asked by the Tampa Bay hierarchy, the Arians told reporters Wednesday: “I will carry this on. I’ll wait until the end of December.”
“It was really, really, really good and there were some really, really bad ones,” Arians added. “I will wait until it is over and then we will decide.”
Since being drafted by the Buccaneers four years ago, Winston has racked up 18,287 yards on 110 touchdowns and 78 interceptions.
The Buccaneers will face the Indianapolis Colts (6-6) on Sunday.
