Apple CEO Teases Artificial Intelligence Announcement in Q1 Earnings Call
Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted at the possibility of an upcoming artificial intelligence (AI) announcement during the company’s fiscal first-quarter earnings call.
Cook’s comments, although lacking in specific details, suggest that Apple aims to compete with major technology companies such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and OpenAI in the field of cutting-edge AI models capable of generating text and images.
“As we look ahead, we will continue to invest in these and other technologies that will shape the future,” said Cook. “That includes artificial intelligence, where we are dedicating significant time and effort. We are excited to reveal the details of our ongoing work in this space later this year.”
The emergence of generative AI, particularly with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and the rapid improvement of image generators, has garnered significant attention from tech companies and investors since 2022. While Apple did not unveil its own advanced AI model last year, the company has long been investing in machine learning technology for its chips and software, enabling features like person and pet identification in photos.
Typically, Apple announces new software at its annual developer’s conference, WWDC, in June. Last year, the company introduced an autocorrect feature for the iPhone keyboard based on a transformer-based language model, which shares similarities with GPT. However, during the presentation, Apple refrained from using the term “artificial intelligence,” instead opting for “machine learning.”
Cook added, “Let me just say that I think there’s a huge opportunity for Apple with Gen AI and AI, without divulging further details and getting ahead of myself.”
