Indian Prime Minister announces consensus at G20 Summit
NEW DELHI — Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, declared on Saturday that the Group of 20 nations have reached a consensus on a joint declaration, despite differences over the war in Ukraine.
There were concerns that negotiators and diplomats in Delhi might face challenges in brokering a consensus due to objections from Russia and China regarding the ongoing war.
While details of the exact wording of the communique have not been provided by Modi, the announcement indicates that G20 member states have agreed on the substance of the outcome of this weekend’s leaders’ summit in Delhi.
The proposed consensus, fostered by India, will still need to undergo voting by the leaders, but this is largely considered a formality at this stage. A press conference is scheduled for later on Saturday, where further details are expected to be revealed.
