General Motors Offers New Proposal to Avoid UAW Strike
DETROIT – General Motors is taking steps to prevent a potential strike by the United Auto Workers union. In a new offer presented on Thursday, GM included significant pay increases, more vacation days, and improved benefits for retirees, among other advantages.
New Offer Addresses Union Demands
The proposal, described by GM CEO Mary Barra as “compelling and unprecedented,” covers many of the union’s demands. However, it falls short of the UAW’s request for a 40% pay increase over the four-year period of the deal.
Deal Details Released ahead of Strike Deadline
GM released the details of the offer just hours before the UAW’s scheduled targeted strikes against GM, Ford Motor, and Stellantis. If agreements are not reached by 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday, strikes could be initiated.
GM’s Commitment to the Future
In a public letter, Barra emphasized the importance of finding common ground for the long-term success of the company. “We’re at a crossroads on our path to building a company that can sustain all of us for decades to come,” she said. “Today, we put a compelling and unprecedented economic package on the table that reflects the significance of this critical moment.”
