Senator Bob Menendez Taps Prominent Attorney Abbe Lowell for Federal Bribery Case

Introduction

New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez has chosen Abbe Lowell, the same attorney representing Hunter Biden in his tax and firearm charges, to defend him in his federal bribery case, according to a spokesperson for the prosecutors.

In addition to his representation of President Joe Biden’s son, Lowell has an impressive track record handling high-profile litigation, including Menendez’s previous corruption charges.

Previously, Lowell was also hired by Menendez when he faced allegations in 2015 of accepting illegal gifts from a Florida ophthalmologist. The case was ultimately dropped due to a deadlocked jury.

In 2022, Lowell successfully defended Matthew Grimes, an employee of long-time Trump supporter Tom Barrack, against charges of acting as a secret foreign agent for the United Arab Emirates.

Lowell has also provided legal representation to Jared Kushner, former advisor and son-in-law to President Trump. During Trump’s presidency, Lowell assisted Kushner in obtaining official approval for permanent White House security clearance.

Law360 initially reported Lowell’s hiring by Menendez.

Neither Lowell nor Senator Menendez immediately responded to requests for comment.

Menendez and his wife, Nadine, were indicted on Friday in Manhattan federal court for allegedly using the senator’s political influence to benefit the Egyptian government in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal gifts.

The charges against the senator and his wife include conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion under the color of official right. Three New Jersey businessmen allegedly involved in the bribery transactions are also facing charges related to the first two counts.

Menendez, his wife, and their co-defendants are scheduled to appear in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday morning.
