Cam Newton and Ron Rivera joined the Panthers at the same time, introducing a new era that included Carolina’s second Super Bowl appearance.
On Tuesday afternoon, Panthers owner David Tepper shot Rivera, and injured Newton responded to an Instagram story later that night.
“He will always be grateful for the impact he has had on my life,” Newton writes over a photo of Rivera. “Thank you for giving me a chance … It hurts deeply.”

Newton may not be long for Carolina. The 30-year-old QB tried to play through a leg injury that suffered in the preseason but worsened the injury in Week 2, eventually choosing to have season surgery. He has played 16 games in just one of the last four years and owes more than $ 20 million next season, the last year of a five-year contract.
The Panthers have lost their last four games, falling to a 5-7 overall record.
