Can Consuming Your Preferred Food Items Lead to an Upturn in Crohn’s Disease Hazard?

A study found that eating breakfast cereal, chicken nuggets, and soft drinks increased the risk of developing stomach problems.

And Canadian researchers found that people who eat a lot of ultra-processed foods are more likely to develop Crohn’s disease.

Two years of data from over a million people has revealed the dangers behind our favorite foods.

Study author Prof Neeraj Narula of McMaster University said: “Eating highly processed foods destroys the gut microbiome.

“This causes the immune system to fight certain microorganisms in the gut and trigger an inflammatory pathway that leads to Crohn’s disease,” he explained.

Microbiome imbalance is what happens when gut bacteria are out of balance.

Other highly processed foods include pork, potato chips, pizza, sweets, and chocolate.

Prof Neeraj said that Crohn’s disease is also associated with a non-Mediterranean diet, a high intake of red meat, and a diet low in fiber, zinc and potassium.

But the exact cause of Crohn’s disease is still relatively unknown. Experts believe genetic factors, smoking, and certain stomach conditions may be the cause.

The disease is a chronic, lifelong condition that causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and can lead to cramps, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition.

Symptoms of Crohn’s disease when it is active include:

– diarrhea

– heat

– exhaustion

Pain and painful abdominal cramps

– the presence of blood in the stool

mouth ulcers

Poor appetite and weight loss

Pain or discharge near or around the anus due to inflammation from the tunnel into the skin (fistula)

It is estimated that this disease is on the rise in prevalence worldwide. Prof Neeraj said the increase in cases was linked to the Western diet, including the high levels of highly processed foods.

“In addition to Crohn’s disease, such foods carry other health risks, including diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease,” he added.

The results were published in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
