Capcom Apologizes for Street Fighter 5 Launch Issues and Reflects on Eight Years of Progress

Capcom has issued an apology to players for the rocky launch of Street Fighter 5. The game, which was initially released as a PS4 console exclusive in February 2016, faced criticism for its lack of single-player content, unstable online multiplayer, and a limited roster of 16 characters. Despite these obstacles, the game eventually attracted a dedicated fan base.

To mark the game’s eighth anniversary, Capcom posted a message on the official Japanese Street Fighter account, thanking fans for their support while also acknowledging the game’s shortcomings at launch.

The message recognized the early network issues and lack of content, but highlighted the efforts made by the development team to improve the game. Eventually, Street Fighter 5 grew to include 45 playable characters and added new features to enhance the battle system.

Capcom expressed gratitude for the increased player base and the positive impact it had on the game. The company also mentioned that the reflections from Street Fighter 5’s experience have been applied to its successor, Street Fighter 6.

Street Fighter 6, released in June, has enjoyed a much smoother start with a Metacritic score of 92 and attracted one million players in its first three days. Capcom is aiming for 10 million lifetime sales for the game.
