Carol Vorderman congratulates Louise Minchin on BBC exit 'A wonderful new chapter'

Countdown star and mathematician Carol Vorderman, 60, has taken to Twitter to congratulate Louise Minchin, 52, on her “marvellous” 20-year-stint fronting BBC Breakfast. Yesterday the BBC star announced that she’s decided it’s “time” to leave the show, which she has hosted for over two decades and was inundated with messages of support from fans and celebrity friends, including co-stars Dan Walker and Holly Hamilton, ITV rival Piers Morgan and BBC Breakfast boss Rochard Frediani.

In view of her 463,100 followers, Carol responded to a tweet of Louise’s, congratulating her on her “new chapter”.

She wrote: “Well congratulations missus on a marvellous FOREVER on Breakfast….”

“You will be sorely missed BUT that wonderful new chapter where you can run, bike, swim whenever and wherever you want is beckoning…. xxxx much love,” Carol continued.

The star added: “Go girl,” along with a red heart emoji.

Louise appreciatively responded: “Thank you so much Carol xx.”

The BBC star had originally re-tweeted a video of her making her big announcement yesterday sitting alongside co-star of five years, Dan Walker.

She wrote: “Thank you so much for all of your kind messages, they are much appreciated xxx.”

Louise made the big announcement that she’s stepping down as BBC Breakfast presenter during the show.

Dan began live on air: “We have some rather significant breakfast news coming your way. I say we, but Louise…”

“Just going to take a little bit of a deep breath,” Louise replied. “So, everybody, it’s something I just wanted to tell you about.

“It will be this year 20 years since I first presented this programme and since then I have felt part of a huge, enormous BBC Breakfast family who includes everyone who works here, everyone on the team, and every one of you who watches the programme.”

Louise continued: “I have loved being part of it but there is a but. You know about the but.

“I have decided it is time that I stop setting my alarm for 3.40am, sometimes when I’m feeling really rebellious, 3.46am in the morning, and I am going to be leaving the programme,” she explained.

“It’s not going to be for a while but just before anything else I just wanted to thank everybody who is watching for your loyalty, your support over all those years, I have loved being par of it, I really will miss it but it is time now to stop that alarm in the morning,” she added.

Louise finished: “Thank you for watching all of those years as well.”

“It’s big news for Louise and I’m sure that’s probably big news for a lot of you watching as well,” Dan added.

After a probe from Dan, Louise promised a leaving party for “sometime after the summer”.

Louise first presented the popular morning show in 2001 and moved with the programme from London to Media City in Salford as lead presenter in 2012.

During her time on the show she has has reported on major global news stories from the last two decades including the last three general elections, Brexit, the worldwide Covid 19 pandemic, the Manchester Arena bombings and the aftermath of the Bataclan Theatre attacks, live from Paris.

Along with interviewing the UK’s main political and party leaders, career highlights on the show include interviewing Sir David Attenborough, the Duchess of Cambridge, Billie Eilish, Jeff Goldblum, George Clooney, and Angelina Jolie and Joanna Lumley.
