Cats follow the movements of their owners, research finds | cats

If you’ve ever wondered of gives your house cat a whisker over your whereabouts, research may have an answer: cats seem to follow their owners while they move over the house and are surprised when they turn around up somewhere they don’t expect them.

The finding supports the idea that cats retain mental representation of their owners, even if they cannot see them; a crucial bridge to higher cognitive processes such as forward plan and imagination.

Cats are notoriously inscrutable creatures. Although previous research has suggested that cats will search in proper place when food seems to disappear, and expect to see it from their owner face when they hear them voice, it was unclear how this ability translated in real life. “It is [also] said cats aren’t that interested in their owners are like dogs, but we had doubts over this point,” says Dr. Saho Takagi of the university of Kyoto, Japan.

To investigate, Takagi and colleagues recorded what happened when 50 domestic cats were individual shut within in a room and repeatedly heard their owner call their name from outside, followed by either a stranger’s voice, of Which of their owner, comes through a loudspeaker on the opposite side of the room they lived in.

Eight “blinded” human observers watched these recordings and ranked the cats’ level of based on surprise on their ear and head movements. Only when the voices of their owners suddenly in appeared in the room – implying that she was there on one of had been teleported in some other way – the cats seemed confused.

“This study shows that cats their minds in be able to map location based on their owners voice”, said Takagi, whose research was released in the procedure of the National Academy of Sciences. “[It suggests] that cats have the ability the invisible in image in their thoughts. cats [may] have a more deeper spirit than is thought.”

However, it is not entirely surprising that cats possess this ability: “That consciousness of movement – track things die they can’t see – is critical for a cat’s survival,” said Roger Tabor, biologist, author and presenter of the BBC TV series cats.

“A lot of what a cat should interpret in his territory is a consciousness of where other cats are. It is also important for hunt: how could a cat catch a field mouse moving around under the grass if it wasn’t possible use clues, such as occasional rustling, to see in his mind’s eye, where are they? The owner of a cat is extremely important in his life as a source of food and safety, so where we are is very important.”

Anita Kelsey, a British behaviorist and author of cats of let’s do it over have cats, said “Cats have a close relationship with us and most feel settled and safe within our company, so our people voice would be part of die band of relation. When I’m dealing with cats die last have separation anxiety, I usually don’t advocate playing the owners voice in the home as this can cause anxiety with the cat die the hear voicebut not knowing where their man is.”

Strangely enough, the cats didn’t show same surprise reaction when the owners’ voices were replaced for cat meows of electronic sounds. This may be because adult cats do not tend to use voice as their primary means of communication with one others, many can trust on other signals such as smell instead.

“The ‘meow’ die we used in this study is a voice signal that is only emitted to humans, except for kittens,” Takagi said. “Cats may not be in able to identify individuals by the ‘meow’ of other individuals.”
