The cold, blustery weather of winter can be hard on everyone’s skin. The dry air leaves our lips chapped, and low temperatures make us reach for lotions and oils in order to rehydrate. As such, many of us spend each season trying new tricks to keep skin fresh, bright, and healthy.

As is often the case when it comes to health and beauty, a lot of those tricks can be drawn from celebrities (who seem to have magical ways of working these things out!). So with that in mind, let’s take a look at a few ways to keep our skin healthy just like the stars do!

Cleanser

It’s no secret that our skin (and hair) end up picking up everything the environment throws at us: pollutants, chemicals, extreme weather, and even our makeup can cause skin problems. A good cleanser goes a long way toward making sure that our skin stays fresh regardless of what we put it through the day in and day out.

Experts recommend we wash our faces at least twice a day, to begin with. But what should we use when we go beyond soap and water? Actress and model Poppy Delevingne swear by CeraVe’s SA Smoothing Cleanser, a gel cleanser with salicylic acid that helps unclog pores. “My dearest friend, the makeup artist Florrie White introduced me to this brand last year on a shoot and I’ve never looked back,” Delevingne said in an Instagram post. “It works wonders if you suffer from maskne like I do!”

What’s maskne, you ask? It’s the acne we get from the masks we now wear every day (sometimes all day). So you may want to be sure to change your mask or wash it as recommended, too. Either way though, it’s worth taking Delevingne’s tip into account, because who wouldn’t want skin like hers?

An Entire Brightening Regimen

Finding a certain moisturizer that plays well with your favorite cleanser can be a pain. The solution? A whole package aimed at brightening your complexion!

Think of a skin brightening routine as a sort of all-in-one counterpunch to the skin woes of winter, consisting of multiple products packaged together to complement one another. Naturally, plenty of specific products could factor into this kind of effort, but to give you a celebrity example (rather than just a brand), we’ll point to none other than Jill Biden!

The First Lady of the United States may not be the typical go-to for a beauty or skincare routine. But if brightness is your goal you could do worse than imitating Dr. Biden, who is known to focus on brightening and seems to retain a youthful glow no matter the season.

Moisturizer

Best known for her striking fashion looks, Emily Ratajkowski also takes impeccable care of her skin. She currently uses a number of moisturizers, but her favorite is By Terry Hydra-Éclat Daily Care. Ratajkowski claims, “A lot of moisturizers, they don’t absorb into your skin quickly enough, but this one seeps in right away.”

With winter’s cold air making our skin brittle and cracked, we need a moisturizer that can get absorbed quickly so we can get on with our lives, and Hydra-Éclat Daily Care fits the bill. Just be sure to avoid putting it on overly sensitive skin such as around your eyes or open wounds caused by cracked, chapped skin; lotions and moisturizers tend to leave open skin stinging.

Serum

During the winter months, we need to break out the big guns: serums. The serum penetrates the skin more than common lotions and moisturizers and is great for any type of skin.

Sounds expensive, right? It doesn’t have to be! Superstar actress Scarlett Johansson and her makeup artist are known to turn to The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid Serum, which rings up for less than $10. Incidentally, there’s also evidence that hyaluronic acid serums can help your hair, so it’s sort of a win-win-win! (Healthy skin, good price, happy hair.)

Vitamin C Cream

Like Dr. Biden, Olivia Colman is a little bit outside of the typical population of young starlets or Instagram models we look to for skincare tips. But there’s no arguing with the general vibrancy of the Oscar-winning actress, who tends to light up any room she’s in.

Interestingly enough, this comes down in part to a vitamin cream! Emma Hardie’s Moisture Boost Vitamin C Cream is one of Colman’s favorite prep creams. According to Harvard Health, these vitamin creams “may help slow early skin aging, prevent sun damage, and improve the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, and acne.” Looking at Colman, that sounds about right!

Skin needs all the help it can get during the winter, and Vitamin C can boost us up and get us ready to head outside when the sun and warmth return!

Don’t let the winter cold get under your skin, and take a page out of these celebs’ books to protect yourself. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to cover up and wear protective clothing like scarves and hats as well – just like your grandma said!
