Chelsea beat Aston Villa on penalties and United are out of the League Cup

LONDON: Chelsea qualified for the fourth round of the League Cup after beating Aston Villa 4-3 on penalties after the game ended in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Manchester United greeted the tournament by losing 1-0 to West Ham United at Old Trafford with a goal in opening by Manuel Lanzini. Tottenham Hotspur lost 2-0 lead over Wolverhampton Wanderers but won 3-2 on penalties to give Nuno Espirito Santo his second win over his former team in this season. Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel made 10 changes to the starting lineup and led in Germany’s Timo Werner led the way with a header in the 54th minute after a Reese James cross. This is Werner’s first goal in this season, and he missed the opportunity to score 2-0 before young Cameron Archer equalized, so the two teams resorted to penalties, while James decided Chelsea’s qualification. Arsenal beat Wimbledon 3-0 to advance to fourth round, as Leicester City overcame their stumbling block in championship winning 2-0 at host Millwall. Brighton and Hove Albion continued their impressive start to the season with a 2-0 win over Swansea City. (Reuters)
