Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said Beijing continued its large-scale military exercises around Taiwan on Saturday, a day after the People’s Liberation Army sent out a “number. record”of warplanes and military ships in the areas around the island.
Many planes and ships cross the unofficial but highly respected central line in the 130-kilometer-wide Taiwan Strait that separates the island from mainland China.
Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu condemned on Twitter what he called a “serious escalation of the military threat to pace and stability in the region, and it must be condemned. ”
In addition to the exercises, the People’s Liberation Army fired 11 ballistic missiles into Taiwan, one of which flew over the island and passed close to the capital Taipei for the first time, according to reports.
Five other missiles also landed east of Taiwan in Japan’s exclusive economic zone. in a signal widely seen as a warning to Tokyo to stay out of conflict.
