Chinese paleontologists have discovered hipparion fossils in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China.

According to the Chinese news agency Xinhua, these horses are prehistoric mammals belonging to the horse family. And that these fossils are about eight million years old.

Hipparions are reported to be an extinct genus of horses that lived 8-5 million years ago in different parts of the globe, except for South America and Australia, and first appeared in North America. Scientists know more than 50 species of these animals that are completely extinct.

According to Xinhua, specialists from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleontology, in the highlands of Wenchuan Province, which borders Kazakhstan, in addition to the remains of the hipparion, found the fossil remains of paleotragus (an extinct animal of the giraffe family). ) and tetralophodons (an ancient animal similar to an elephant). ).

According to Chinese scientists, Wenchuan County is the only place in Xinjiang where the remains of extinct hipparion horses were found. Therefore, this province is considered a key link in the study of the evolution of the ancient horses of Eurasia.

“This site is of great importance for science, and the excavation will be carried out according to the approved scheme,” said Wang Shizhi, a researcher at the institute.
