China is moving closer to Taiwan … and offers to work with Washington to resolve differences

The Chinese army is conducting military exercises near Taiwan, in response to a visit by a United States Congressional delegation to the island, in one moment in which Beijing has confirmed its willingness to work with Washington to “manage differences”.

The Chinese Defense Ministry said in a statement released Tuesday that exercises in the Taiwan Strait region are a “necessary measure to safeguard national sovereignty.” The statement did not mention the timing of the maneuvers, the participating forces and their exact location.

The statement added that the “Combined War Preparation Patrol” led by the Chinese Army’s “Eastern Theater Command” was motivated by the “wrong words and deeds of the countries concerned on the Taiwan issue” and the actions of those who have supported the independence of the autonomous island.

The US has strong, but informal, relations with Taiwan, and tensions between the US and China are mounting on many issues, including Hong Kong, the South China Sea, the coronavirus pandemic, and trade.

Details were not yet available on the US delegation, which was due to arrive in Taiwan on Tuesday.

A statement released by the Chinese Ministry of Defense strongly condemned the visit, saying: “No one should underestimate the PLA’s determination to protect the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Chinese people.”

China regards Taiwan as its own territory, which should be annexed by military force if necessary.

The two sides split during the 1949 civil war and, after a brief period of rapprochement, tensions between the two countries escalated during the tenure of Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen.

In another context, Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a statement posted on the site web of the Chinese Embassy in Washington that “China is ready to work with the United States to properly manage differences”.

“In accordance with the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, China is willing to work with the United States to strengthen trade and cooperation in all fields and jointly address regional and international issues as well as global challenges, “Xi Jinping said in a congratulatory message to the National Commission for US-China Relations. .

He stressed the need to “adequately manage differences in order to bring relations between China and the United States back on the right path for solid and constant development”.
