At one point in Hollywood history, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were one of the most revered couples in the industry, however, it is rumored that Tom’s relationship with Scientology caused significant problems in their romance.
According to The Daily Beast, Tom almost left the Church of Scientology before his ox with Matt Lauer, the appearance of the Oprah Winfrey Show, and the controversial recruiting video. The Beast claims that Nicole Kidman played a crucial role in her temporary exit from the religious organization, in addition to Stanley Kubrick’s film Eyes Wide Shut.
Nicole, who was raised a Catholic in her native Australia, is the daughter of Dr. Antony Kidman, who was a staple in the psychology industry in the country. Ironically, Scientology has vehemently criticized the practice of psychology, allegedly accusing the Holocaust and 9/11 of discipline and practice.
Mike Rinder, who once worked as a senior executive in the Church of Scientology, says that psychiatry, for the Church, is one of the great evils of humanity. Despite his education, for years Kidman practiced as a Scientologist and even participated in courses.
However, as she became increasingly disillusioned with the Church, Tom became paranoid and wanted to type on her phone to find out who she was talking to. The Beast reports that Rathbun hired investigators to spy on him.
Rinder then forwarded the request to David Miscavige, told him what Tom wanted to do, and Miscavige demanded, “damn it *, do it”. A private investigator was then hired and they tapped his phone for information about his personal life.
In an official statement from the Church of Scientology, they denied spying on their members, tapped on Kidman’s phone, and also claimed that they were in no way involved in the breakup of Kidman and Cruise. According to Rinder, after Nicole no longer supported Scientology, she became a disability, and they then convinced Tom to break up with her.
Cruise filed for divorce from the actress in February 2001 and started dating Penelope Cruz soon after.
