Julie Goodyear’s husband Scott Brand has urged fans to show “understanding” when they spot her, due to the Coronation Street star’s battle with dementia.

Scott explained the couple have gone public with the star’s health battle as she “can get confused” if fans recognise her while she’s out and about seeing friends.

In a statement on behalf of Bet Lynch actress Julie, Scott said: “We have taken the decision to publicly announce the diagnosis as Julie still loves visiting friends and eating out.

“Inevitably she is recognized, and fans love to meet her – and she them – but she can get confused particularly if she is tired.

“I hope people will understand,” the statement concluded.

While announcing the diagnosis for the first time today, Scott said: “My darling wife and I have had to come to terms with this heart-breaking diagnosis.

“Unfortunately, Julie has been suffering forgetfulness for some time and we have been seeking medical advice and assistance, but we now know that there is no hope of a reversal in the situation – and that her condition will get progressively, and perhaps speedily, worse.”

Scott and Julie have been married since 2007.

The soap star rose to fame after portraying Corrie’s loveable land lady Bet Lynch on and off for 25 years.

Bet was beloved by fans for her signature leopard print adorned wardrobe and her beehive blonde hairdo.

Julie’s portrayal made Bet into one of the most legendary barmaids to serve in the soap’s famous Rovers Return pub.

The actress made her Coronation Street debut in 1966, when she landed a nine episode stint.

She went on to become a familiar face on the Cobbles between 1970 and 1995.

Her departure from the soap was watched by 22 million ITV viewers.

Due to her popularity, Julie made a comeback to Corrie for eight episodes in 2002, and seven more in 2003.

The actress’ work was awarded with an MBE in 1996, after she won a Special Recognition Award at the 1995 National Television Awards.

Outside of her soap role, Julie appeared on reality shows Celebrity Fit Club and the tenth series of Celebrity Big Brother.

She also showed off her acting talents on stage in the West End production of Calendar Girls.
