Deadly earthquake in Afghanistan

At least eight people were killed last night after an earthquake struck northeastern Afghanistan, and an official news agency quoted an official as saying the death toll could rise.

“The earthquake on Sunday night caused material and human losses in Kunar province,” Najibullah Hanif, director of media and culture in Kunar province and spokesman for the provincial governor, adding that the number of victims could increase.

The US Geological Survey recorded a 5.3 magnitude earthquake near the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad in the prime hours on Monday morning.

Afghanistan is still reeling from the aftermath of a powerful earthquake that killed more than 1,000 people in June and devastated villages in the east of the country.
