Defense ministers of America and Russia discuss the Ukrainian crisis in a call

The RIA news agency reported that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had a telephone conversation with his US counterpart Lloyd Austin, during which they discussed international security and Ukraine issues.

The Pentagon said: “Austin and Shoigu stressed the need for communication channels to remain open in the context of the war. in Ukraine”.

The conversation is the second between the two ministers since the war began in Ukraine.

“Several important issues relating to international security, including the situation in Ukraine, “were discussed during the conversation, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a note.

The Pentagon also reported Austin pointed out in another phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart, Oleksiy Reznikov, the continued support of the international community to strengthen Ukraine’s strength and protect its ability to defend itself.

He added that Austin renewed the US commitment to support Ukraine’s ability to deal with the military operation launched by Russia.

The last conversation between Shoigu and Austin since the conflict began on May 13, days before the telephone conversation between Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov and his American counterpart Mark Milley on May 19.

Relations between Moscow and Washington have continued to deteriorate since the start of the Russian attack in Ukraine on February 24, after having been at the lowest level in recent years, amid allegations of electoral interference, espionage and expulsion of diplomats.

Russia is particularly critical of major US military and financial assistance to Ukraine, accusing the US of trying to prolong the conflict.

Ahead of the G20 summit in Indonesia in mid-November, Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week that he did not see the “need” for talks with Joe Biden.

For his part, the president of the United States has not ruled out a tale meeting and on 6 October he told reporters: “It’s not clear yet.”

In another development, Mikhailo Polodyk, adviser to the director of the Ukrainian president’s office, called on Friday to withdraw Russia’s veto and not to attend G20 meetings of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“A country that invades its neighbors with tanks, commits genocide and threatens weapons of mass destruction should not have the right of veto at the United Nations,” Polodyk said on his Twitter account.

He added that what he described as a person ordering missile strikes on vital infrastructure “should not sit at the same table with the leaders of the Group of Twenty”, referring to Putin, whose country has launched a military operation. in Ukraine since the end of February.
