On February 1st, the hit movie is returning to Netflix, along with the first of its sequels. Netflix will add the Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2, Minions film saga on February 1st, 2022.
The popular Illumination franchise launcher was a constant streaming hit on Netflix when it was on the service’s lineup but eventually left it for a while at Peacock on September 25th, 2020.
Although this animated film is almost ten years old, the film has proven time and again how much fans love it. While new movies and shows typically dominate Netflix’s top 10 lists, Gru and his minions prove timeless. Despicable Me 2, an addition to the Minions movie saga, is back on Netflix and reigns in the top 10 lists. The film was the highest-grossing film in Universal Pictures Studios’ 101-year history. To this day, it is one of the highest-grossing films produced by the iconic studio.
Why is Despicable Me gaining popularity suddenly?
As Netflix users know all too well, the platform often organizes its list of viewers. New titles are added, old ones are deleted, some are renewed, and some come back after deletion. Fans of series and movies often find it frustrating, but unfortunately, there is no other way to do it. But Netflix accepts requests from fans of movies and shows who want to return to the platform. Often, these wishes are taken when viewers see their favorite titles make a comeback.

Despicable Me is one of those favorites. Netflix removed this popular title from its list of movies in September 2020. Then it started airing on Peacock at the same time, which led fans to believe that it wouldn’t be back on the platform anytime soon. But Gru and his minions have shown how timeless they are.
Despicable Me was first released in 2010 and became a huge hit for Illumination and Universal, earning more than $543 million at the global box office. The film immediately became a franchise, and two sequels of Despicable Me were released in 2013 and 2017. Illumination also released a prequel film, Minions, which focused on the origin of Gru’s beloved mysterious associates. The Minions sequel, Minions: The Rise of Gru, was set to hit theaters last year but was delayed due to the pandemic. The film has since been shifted to July 2022 release.
