Despite the dam crisis, Sudan intends to purchase 1,000 megawatts of electricity from Ethiopia

The official Sudanese news agency quoted the Energy Minister as saying that Sudan is in talks with Ethiopia to buy 1,000 megawatts of electricity, according to Reuters news agency.

The Sudanese agency said Sudan is already importing about 200 megawatts from Ethiopia, which makes up about 10% of the country’s needs.

Ethiopia is in contrast with Sudan and Egypt over a billion dollar dam that Addis Ababa is building on the Blue Nile to generate electricity, which Ethiopia calls the “Renaissance dam”.

After Ethiopia completed the second filling of the Renaissance dam late last month, the Sudanese Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources said the Nile’s water level in the capital, Khartoum, will reach flood level.

All sectors have warned that water would rise in media 15-25 centimeters and that citizens of all sectors should take all necessary precautions.

Sudan experiences severe flooding, usually in every autumn season, which destroy millions of homes and destroy livelihoods, due to poor infrastructure.
