Detecting the effect of lighting on cognition

Scientists from the University of Michigan, USA, studied the effect of light levels on cognitive abilities, and it became clear to them that winter lighting causes a decrease.

Medical Xpress notes that during this study, the researchers followed weed mice (which sleep at night and stay awake during the day like humans). For four weeks, these mice were exposed to dim light (50 lux – room lighting) and bright light (1000 lux – supermarket lighting). The researchers’ goal was to determine how light (a model that mimics seasonal changes in winter and summer lighting) affects brain function and behavior. Then the mice had to solve the problem of passing the maze.

The researchers found that neuron connections in the brain’s hippocampus, which are responsible for memory in mice, decreased by 30 percent in dim light. It turned out that she suffers from mood disorders and cognitive disorders. Therefore, experts advise spending as much time as possible outdoors in winter (at least 15-30 minutes a day), even if the sky is covered with clouds. Because the level of illumination at the same time on a cloudy day ranges from 10,000 to 20,000 lux.
