Discovering the Delicious Street Food of Egypt

According to an international report, the prices of the famous popular dish Koshari in Egypt jumped by 59% in December 2022 amid a sharp increase in the prices of the ingredients of the famous Egyptian dish.

The Koshari dish consists mainly of boiled rice, pasta, lentils, fried onions, tomato sauce and garlic with a little bit of vinegar.

Koshars are sold in Egypt in street carts and fast food outlets, and are also served on a fancy plate in tourist restaurants.

Bloomberg News reported today, Monday, that the Koshari index posted a 59% year-on-year increase in December, three times Egypt’s inflation rate of 21.3%.
And she stressed that prices for koshari ingredients have risen sharply over the recent period: the price of lentils has increased by 66.5 percent, rice by 89 percent and tomatoes by 83 percent.

There was an increase in the price of pasta by 75%, onion by 27.5%, oil by 47% and garlic by 36.5%.

And koshari, which does not contain carbohydrates and meat, has been associated with the tables of poor Egyptians for the last decades because of its low price.

In Egypt, the largest Arab country with a population of about 104 million, an Egyptian cannot do without the cheap and delicious Koshari dish.
