Discovery of a fossil of an unknown animal that lived 50 million years before the dinosaurs

A high school teacher found the fossilized remains of an unknown animal that walked the earth 300 million years ago – about 50 million years before dinosaurs – while walking with her dog near a beach in Canada.

Lisa Saint-Cours Cormier, 36, spotted something coming out of the red mud on a beach in Prince Edward Island. Upon closer inspection, she realized that it was the chest. Then she saw an elbow and a skull.

Scientists have not yet identified the fossil, but John Calder, a geologist and paleontologist working on the remains, suspects it is a species of lizard or a relative.

Discoveries like this happen every “50 or 100 years,” Calder told the CBC, and it could be “a unique fossil on the tree of life … the evolution of amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and us.”

Dinosaurs are believed to have lived about 245 million years ago and then died out 66 million years ago. The fossil is thus estimated to be around 300 million years old at the end of the Carboniferous and Permian periods.

Calder noted that it was likely that the fossil had recently weathered and may have been washed away by the tides.

The beach fossil is small, over two feet long, but contains incredible details that have led researchers to determine that it lived long before the dinosaurs.

“It’s a very early stage in the evolution of reptiles from amphibians, it’s an offshoot,” Calder told the CBC. “So it’s going to be a real mystery. It’ll probably take a year to figure out who it is.”

In fact, scientists have found very few pre-dinosaur fossils, so after all, the creature on the beach could be a completely new species.

Cormier was delighted with the rare find, saying “I think I’ve found something that could be 300 million years old, that’s incredible.”

Scientists have moved the fossil about 58 kilometers from the island to a temporary paleontology repository in Greenwich, where it will be stored until it can be transported back to the Nova Scotia Paleontology Laboratory for CT scans.

Calder said that the petrified creature is likely similar in appearance to a poisonous Mexican lizard known as the Gila monster. “Ultimately it all depends on the scientists who publish a paper on this topic and decide to give it a title,” he said.
