Dispute between Germany and Qatar over the terms of the LNG supply agreements

Three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that Germany and Qatar are facing difficulties in talks over long-term agreements for the supply of liquefied natural gas, amid disagreements over key terms, including the term of any contract.

The sources added that Germany, which aims to cut carbon emissions by 88% by 2040, is reluctant to accept Qatari terms of signing agreements for periods of no less than 20 years to secure the huge volumes of liquefied gas. it needs to reduce its dependence on Russian gas.

Sources said Qatar is also setting conditions, including a destination clause that would prevent Berlin from shipping gas. in other European regions, a condition that the European Union opposes.

Germany received more than half of its gas and coal and about a third of its oil from Russia, with difficulties in finding alternative short-term supplies.
