Spotify still intends to introduce a lossless music experience. However, the exact date and format are still up in the air.

Over two years have passed since Spotify first revealed plans to roll out a “HiFi” subscription tier that would grant customers access to a library of CD-quality music tracks. The tier was once scheduled to launch by the end of 2021. But, similar actions taken by competing streaming services overturned Spotify’s lossless approach.

Since that time, Apple Music has offered lossless listening for the same monthly subscription fee. The additional fees for Amazon’s lossless audio library have been eliminated. The idea of Spotify charging customers extra for a comparable service now seems much less logical.

In an interview with The Verge on Tuesday, Spotify co-president Gustav Söderström said, “We announced it, but then the industry shifted for many reasons. “We will do it, but we will do it in a way that makes sense to our listeners. We had to adapt because the industry changed.”

Söderström stated, “We want to accomplish it in a way that works for us in terms of cost. For obvious reasons, he continued, “I’m not allowed to comment on our label agreements or what other actors in the industry did.

The Verge claims that Spotify HiFi has been prepared for release for more than a year. Employees at Spotify have access to HiFi. Yet, it was initially supposed to be more expensive than the basic plan. Spotify’s lossless is now anticipated to be a part of a larger strategy that includes access to spatial audio tracks and other benefits with audiobooks and podcasts in light of Apple and Amazon’s actions.

The exact timing of the plan’s implementation is still a mystery; Söderström could only tell The Verge that HiFi “is coming at some time.”
