Dragon Ball Super: Broly is a 2018 Japanese martial arts fantasy adventure film directed by Tatsuya Nagamine and written by Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball series. It is a legal remake of Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, the twentieth Dragon Ball feature film overall, the third film created with Toriyama’s direct collaboration, and the first Dragon Ball Super branded film. The film follows Goku and Vegeta as they battle a strong Saiyan named Broly following the events of the “Universe Survival” storyline. The film also narrates the history of the Saiyans and the backstory of these three Saiyans who had various fates during the wrong period of their species’ history, ending in a major conflict between them.

The film marks the first appearance of a Broly recast in the main Dragon Ball continuity, after the initial version appeared in the movie Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan (1993), Broly – Second Coming (1994), and Bio-Broly (1994). Dragon Ball Super: Broly has received positive reviews and grossed over $122 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing Dragon Ball film of all time, the highest-grossing anime film of 2018, the fourth-highest-grossing anime in the United States and Canada, and the 15th highest-grossing animated film in all ages.

In 732, the annexation of the planet Vegeta passed from the Hungarian warlord King Cold to his son, Lord Frieza. King Vegeta, the ruler of the Saiyans, believes that his son, Prince Vegeta, is destined to liberate their race from Frieza and rule the universe. He learns about Broly, a Saiyan child born with a strength level beyond that of his son, and the exile of Broly to the distant planet Vampa where he and his father Paragus are stranded after their spaceship is damaged. Paragus vows to raise Broly to avenge King Vegeta. Five years later, in 737, a lower-class Saiyan warrior named Bardock becomes concerned about Frieza’s evil and tells his wife, Jin, about his suspicions of Frieza. They send their infant son, Kakarot, to Earth. His fears come true when Frieza destroys the planet Vegeta after learning of the legend of the Super Saiyan and the Super Saiyan God that he fears that they both might one day seem to challenge him. The genocide of the Saiyan race occurs as Broly, Paragus, Kakarot, his brother Raditz and Vegeta, his companion Nappa and Vegeta’s brother survive the destruction.

Kakarot, now known as Goku, trained with Vegeta in 780, forty-three years after the Tournament of Strength. Trunks phoned Bulma and informed her that Frieza’s forces had taken six of the seven mystical Dragon Balls. Goku, Vegeta, Bulma, and Whis journey to the Arctic to recover the seventh Dragon Ball before Frieza. Meanwhile, Cheelai and Lemo, two lower-class soldiers in Frieza’s army, rescue Broly and Paragus from Planet Vampa. They are taken to Frieza, who recruits them to aid him in defeating Goku and Vegeta. On Earth, the two parties collide as Paragus orders Broly to attack Vegeta.

Broly fights Super Saiyan Vegeta, and his strength and fighting abilities increase throughout the battle to the point where he seems to outsmart the Saiyan Prince in the form of Super Saiyan God. Goku challenges Broly in his basic form, Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan God, and Super Saiyan Blue, and manages to gain the advantage. Frieza, remembering how Goku first transformed into Super Saiyan form, responds by killing Paragus using his signature Death Beam technique. After he witnesses his father’s death, Broly’s latent Super Saiyan powers awaken. Broly is now a mindless savage, outsmarting Goku and Vegeta in both Super Saiyan Blue forms, so they trick him into attacking Frieza. At the same time, Goku travels to Piccolo using his fleeting movement skill, which helps Vegeta learn how to perform the Fusion Dance technique. Frieza transforms into his golden form to combat Broly throughout their attempts. Goku and Vegeta successfully combine into Gogeta after two failed tries and return to the battlefield. Gogeta dominates the fight with Super Saiyan until an angry Broly rises even more into Super Saiyan Full Power form. Broly regains the advantage, so Gogeta assumes the divine Super Saiyan Blue form, allowing him to take advantage of the battle again. The two Saiyans collide even more violently, penetrating multiple dimensions before returning to Earth.

Gogeta defeats Broly using the Meteor Explosion and nearly kills him with the Ultimate Kamehameha. Still, Cheelai and Lemo, who have formed a friendship with Broly, summon the Eternal Dragon Shenron with the Dragon Balls and use their wish to transport Broly safely to Vampa. Frieza retreats, promising to come back again. Goku later meets Broly, Chennai, and Lemo in Vampa, wishing to be friends and providing them with various survival supplies while also hoping to compete with Broly and offer to help teach him how to control his power. Before leaving, Goku tells Broly to call Kakarot.

Why was Broly fighting Goku?

Baby Broly thought he saw the one who would kill him, and that vision stayed with him over the years. This is why Broly was obsessed with killing Goku and was trying to prevent what he thought was his death at the hands of Goku.

Can Goku defeat Broly?

Despite his strength, Goku’s chances of defeating Broly are still very low. Fans believe Broly beats him in terms of combat.

How is Broly different from Goku?

Broly was born the same day as Bardock’s son, Kakarot (who ultimately evolved into the series’ main hero, Son Goku). Broly was born with a great energy level of 10,000, whereas Kakarot was born with a very low energy level of 2.
