What Is Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might About?
One night as Bulma, Krillin, Oolong, and Gohan are out on a camping trip, an unknown cosmic object heading towards Earth crash lands in the forest nearby, causing a fire. Gohan and Krillin are successful in putting out the fire and using the Dragon Balls to repair the forest and the creatures who were killed by the flames. Gohan befriends Icarus, a tiny dragon. Unbeknownst to the group, the fire was started by a probe sent by Turles, a Saiyan space pirate who bears a striking resemblance to Goku and has chosen the Earth to plant the tree of might, which absorbs the life of a planet and converts it into fruit that, when consumed, grants the consumer massive power increases. Turles’ henchman plant the seed, and King Kai informs Goku mentally of the danger. He, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, and Chiaotzu try and fail to destroy the tree with energy blasts. Turles’ henchmen strike and wholly overrun them. As water evaporates and plants and animals perish, the Earth begins to succumb to the devastation caused by the tree’s life absorption. Turles enters the fighting after recognizing that Gohan is part-Saiyan and deduces that he is Goku’s son, who he claims is from the same class of Saiyan fighters, explaining their similar features. Turles is impressed with Gohan’s ability and invites him to join his conquest. Nonetheless, he resists and tries to fight Turles before Piccolo intervenes to save him. Piccolo is forced to defend Gohan by Turles, and the Namekian is eliminated. Turles constructs a fake moon and compels Gohan to see it, transforming him into an oozaru, who assaults Goku but is soothed by the presence of Icarus. Turles injures Icarus with an energy blast, sending Gohan into a frenzy before Goku uses an energy disc to break his son’s tail, converting him back to normal and sparing him from Turles’ approaching energy shots. Goku eliminates Turles’ henchmen and battles his demonic doppelganger. Goku gains the upper hand over Turles until he acquires and consumes a fully grown piece of fruit from the Tree of Might. Turles overwhelms Goku with an unexpected rush of power until his comrades arrive for his help. As they struggle to defeat Turles, Goku begins to build a Spirit Bomb. Still, the Earth, having been drained by the Tree of Might, does not have the energy left to fuel Goku’s bomb, which Turles destroys properly. On the other hand, the energy from the Tree of Might pours into Goku, allowing him to generate another, more powerful Spirit Bomb. Goku meets Turles beneath the tree’s roots and directs the attack at him, sending him up the tree and killing them both. As the heroes celebrate their triumph, the Earth begins to recover. Piccolo sits alone by a waterfall to contemplate.
