'Dull as Prince William' John Cleese aims jibe at royals as he bemoans Euro 2020 matches

Fawlty Towers star John Cleese, 81, has paid a backhanded compliment to Prince William, 38, while slating recent Euro 2020 matches. The actor took to Twitter to compare the matches to the Duke of Cambridge, branding them “dull as Prince William”.

John appeared to take a thinly-veiled swipe at some other members of the Royal Family, as he declared that being boring “is exactly what you want in a Royal”.

The star spoke out while discussing his opinions on the tournament so far in view of his 5.6 million followers this afternoon.

He penned: “I’m wondering why I find most of the football played in the Euros very boring

“If we can anticipate where the ball is going to be passed a second or so before it happens, this must make the defenders’ job easier mustn’t it ?

One person wrote: “Lol, yes, it was about as dull as him. Shame, Spain could play better football in the past.”

They told the actor: “First games are often cagey and International teams have less time together so work primarily on tactical shape and preventing the opposition scoring.

“Attacking tactics are more complex and take more time. But I think it’s been pretty entertaining so far. Hang in there.”

John replied: “Thank you.

“I did enjoy the first 20 minutes of the England match

“But is there no limit to the amount of predictable square and back passing that we can tolerate ?”
