When the pandemic was at its peak, Warner Bros. caused controversy by releasing all of its movies on streaming platforms on the same day they hit theaters. In 2021, the company adopted a 45-day release window, meaning that movies would be available on HBO Max 45 days after their theatrical release. As a result of this strategy, many people watched the first Dune on HBO Max. However, as movie theaters reopen and audiences around the world become more willing to return to cinemas, Dune: Part Two will only be available in theaters. The film will be available on digital platforms months after its theatrical release.

Dune: Part Two Plot

In September of 2021, director Denis Villeneuve spoke about the then-unconfirmed Dune sequel and said the following:

“Our challenge was to introduce you to the world, the ideas, the codes, the cultures, the different families, and the different planets. Now that we’ve done that, it’s like we have an insane playground. It allows me to go berserk and really create. Dune Part I was like an appetizer, and Dune Part II is the main meal. Although Dune Part I was my most exciting project, Dune Part II is already getting me even more excited. That’s all I can say.”

What’s Next After Dune: Part Two?

Although both Dune movies cover the material from the first book, there are still many stories left to tell in this universe. A spin-off series called Dune: Sisterhood is currently in development for Max (formerly HBO Max). The show will follow two Bene Gesserit sisters 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides, the Kwisatz Haderach. Sisterhood may not be the only new addition to the Dune universe, as director Denis Villeneuve expressed his love for the sequel book, Dune Messiah. He said, “There is ‘Dune’s second book, ‘The Messiah of Dune,’ which could make an extraordinary film. I always saw that there could be a trilogy; after that, we’ll see. It’s years of work; I can’t think of going further than that.”
