Eagles’ Doug Pederson: Different game if Carson Wentz doesn’t get injured against Seahawks

Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson believes his team’s NFC clash with the Seattle Seahawks would have played differently if Carson Wentz had not suffered a head injury.

Wentz left in the first quarter after striking a helmet on the back of his head from the Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. He was replaced by the 40-year-old backup of Josh McCown, who made his debut after 17 seasons in the NFL.

Asked if the game would be different if Wentz was healthy, Pederson told reporters: “It’s hard to say, but I would say yes if it was healthy.” With the game plan we had, I think, but it’s hard to guess. “

The Eagles hoped Wentz could lead the team deep into the playoffs, having played the full regular season for the first time since 2016, his first year. Wentz suffered major injuries in 2017 and 2018, with Nick Foles climbing to lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl 52 victory. Sunday’s playoff appearance was Wentz’s first career.

“I feel for him, I feel bad for him,” Pederson told Wentz. “I was seeing him soon at the gym afterwards, I’m disappointed for him, I wanted this for him, many of his teammates did, too, and the team and the organization have been through a lot.”

The Eagles suffered an injury-plagued season, but Zach Ertz’s tight end managed to fit in and face the Seahawks despite two non-dislocated rib fractures in Week 16.

Ertz rushed to the hospital after finding blood in his urine after the injury, but recovered two weeks later.

“It was difficult, it was very difficult,” an Ertz tearful told reporters. “It hurts, it was very high and low, my faith kept me inside, it kept me grounded, there was a plan for me.

“I just wanted it to be black and white, honestly, I got the feeling out of it, I just prayed that I wanted it to be clear, I didn’t want it to be a gray area where it was an emotional decision. When I was unanimous that I was good to play, I knew that there was a plan and a reason, so I was able to go. “

“I wanted to play for this city,” Ertz added. “I’m very proud to play for my teammates.”
