Effects of a Brief Afternoon Nap on Memory and Mood

A study found that a short afternoon nap can improve memory, mood, and concentration by at least four hours.

The researchers looked at data from 32 young people on mood, alertness and cognitive ability.

Participants were asked to take 10, 30 and 60 minute naps on different days to compare the sustained benefits of different naps.

The study says that any 10 to 60 minute nap has clear benefits.

A study by the National University of Singapore found that 30 minutes of sleep was the “best” for boosting mood, memory and concentration within four hours of waking up.

Half an hour of sleep can also improve memory encoding, which is the process of receiving and understanding new information.

The results of the study showed that a 10-minute nap can reduce drowsiness and improve mood.

Dr. Ruth Leong from the National University of Singapore said: “After the usual amount of sleep at night, 32 young people were subjected to four experimental conditions: waking up, 10 minutes of sleep, 30 minutes of sleep and 60 minutes of sleep. -minute sleep. “Times of 5, 30, 60, and 240 minutes (4 hours) after waking up to compare the persistence of the respective benefits of daytime sleep. The effect of this daytime sleep on memory encoding was also investigated.”

She explained: “Compared to being awake, all types of sleep lasting from 10 to 60 minutes had clear benefits. The increase in positive mood, subjective sleepiness and alertness lasted up to 240 minutes after sleep, suggesting that even a short 10 minutes can reduce sleepiness.”
