Egypt signs $ 4.45 billion high-speed contract

The Egyptian government has announced the signing of a $ 4.45 billion contract for the construction of a high-speed electric railway that will connect the coasts of the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, and will be built by a consortium led by Siemens.

The Cabinet said in a statement, today, Wednesday, that Al received a copy of it, that the contract will include the design, implementation and maintenance of the railway plans for a period of 15 years.

The Council of Ministers stated that the contract includes the design, construction, maintenance and financing of the first line of the high-speed electric railway network (Ain Sukhna – Alexandria – El Alamein – Matrouh) with a length of 660 km.

The contract will be implemented between the Ministry of Transport, represented by the National Tunnel Authority, and an Egyptian-German consortium led by the German company Siemens Transport, in alliance with Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction.

For his part, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said the contract will bring about a change of civilization in the means of transport in Egypt, and at the same time will contribute to the rapid achievement of the desired development.

Madbouly added that the German company has become a “successful partner” for the Egyptians in many projects in various sectors.

For its part, the Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir said that the contract provides for the construction of a line of fast electric trains (passengers and freight) that will connect the city of Ain Sukhna, on the Red Sea coast, to Matrouh, on the Mediterranean coast, passing through the new administrative capital, Helwan, Sixth of October City, Alexandria and the cities of Burj Al Arab and Al Alamein is 660 km long and includes 21 stations, including 8 stations in where express trains stop and regional trains stop in all the stations.

The Minister of Transport indicated that the alliance led by the German company will carry out all system works for the project, which are represented in signals, communications, railway works, electromechanical works and others, as well as the manufacture and supply of mobile units of all types, which include express trains, regional trains and electric tractors, as well as The supply and installation of railway works (rails – switches ), as well as the design of the workshop, the supply and installation of its equipment and the provision of maintenance services for a period of 15 years, in concomitance with the civil works and construction of the bridge and the project stations in implementation course by the main Egyptian national companies, specifying that the contract will enter in effective from the date of signature and delivery of the post.

The minister added that the express train, which is being implemented for the first time within the Republic, is characterized by a large transport capacity, which reduces traffic congestion and achieves greater safety for passengers and a better impact on the ‘environment. serve the state’s ambitious plan to develop Egyptian ports, including the port of Sokhna, which is the Republic’s main pivotal port on the Red Sea, which will receive goods from all Arab countries, East Asian countries and the Middle East, and is expected to be a ‘area commercial and global logistics that will be connected to the largest ports of the Republic on the Mediterranean in Alexandria, which will help make it a leader in the transport sector.
