The family of the Egyptian businessman, Safwan Thabet, has announced the release of him and his son after more than two years in prison on charges of “joining and financing a terrorist group”.
Mariam Safwan Thabet, daughter of the businessman and founder of Juhayna Food Industries, said on her Facebook page on Saturday that her father and brother had been released.
Egyptian authorities arrested Safwan Thabeth (76) in late 2020, and two months later his son Saif was jailed.
A government-formed Judiciary Committee issued a decision in 2015 to seize Safwan Thabet’s money and property due to alleged ties to the banned Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
Juhayna Food Industries is the largest dairy producer in bottle and juices in Egypt was founded in 1983 and exports its products to the markets of the Middle East, America and Europe.
