Elon Musk: 100 Starlink devices are currently working to provide the Internet in Iran

The head of the company, “SpaceX” Elon Musk, announced on Tuesday that nearly 100 ground receiving stations for secure Internet services via the “Starlink” satellite network are currently operational. in Iran.

The billionaire promised in September to make the Internet available through his satellite network in Iran, where the authorities impose increasing restrictions on Internet access.

“We are approaching 100 active Starlinks (devices). in Iran,” Musk wrote on Monday in a tweet.

The billionaire announced in September that he would activate the Starlink service in Iran as part of a US-backed effort to “promote internet freedom and the free flow of information” for Iranians.

Starlink currently has more than 2,000 small satellites orbiting the Earth in low orbit, i.e. at an altitude of a few hundred kilometers, to provide Internet access to the populations of the regions below.

In order to communicate with these satellites, there must be receiving stations on the ground, each of which distributes the service to users via routers.

Musk, the new owner of Twitter, tweeted in response to a video posted on the site of social network by a user who said it was taken “on the streets of Iran” where there is now “more freedom for women to choose whether or not to cover their hair”.

Satellite broadband service could help Iranians bypass government restrictions on accessing the Internet and some platforms social media during the protests.

Since September 16, Iran has been the scene of protests over the death of the young Kurdish Mahsa Amini (22), three days after she was arrested by the “morality police” for not respecting the strict dress rules of the Islamic Republic.

The authorities confirmed the killing of more than 200 people, including dozens of members of the security forces.

Thousands of people were also arrested on the sidelines of the protests, which included anti-authority slogans, and officials deemed many of them “riots”.

For their part, human rights organizations outside Iran denounce the killing of more than 450 protesters at the hands of the security forces.
