Sue Cleaver Opens Up About Friendship with Denise Welch

In a heartfelt interview, Sue Cleaver opened up about her complex relationship with fellow Loose Women panellist Denise Welch. As the iconic Coronation Street actress bids farewell to her beloved role as Eileen Grimshaw, she’s embracing a new chapter at 61, determined to “live fearlessly”. The series has recently seen significant changes, particularly with the departure of the live studio audience this January as part of ITV’s cost-cutting measures.

Sue took a moment to address the often sensationalized rumors surrounding the show’s dynamics. “The media loves to portray ‘catfights,’ but that’s usually reserved for women, isn’t it? There’s never any mention of it when men are involved,” she said. Her long-standing friendship with Denise, spanning over 25 years, has been repeatedly misrepresented, leading to misunderstandings about their bond. “We’ve never had a quarrel; it’s disheartening that the media still spins it that way,” she lamented.

On a personal level, Sue has battled with Type 2 diabetes for almost 30 years. She compared managing this condition to running “a mental marathon every single day.” However, she’s found solace in technology, using a Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitor that provides her with real-time glucose readings, eliminating the need for constant finger-pricking.

Reflecting on her time with Coronation Street, Sue was involved in shaping Eileen’s exit storyline, ensuring it mirrored her own desire to step into a new phase of life. Initially, producers offered her a dramatic send-off, but she opted for a more uplifting conclusion. “I wanted her son, Jason, to return, symbolizing that Eileen should get out there and live bravely,” she shared.

After wrapping her final scenes, Sue celebrated with colleagues before heading to London to mark the next chapter of her life. Despite her departure, her heart remains connected to Coronation Street, particularly as her husband Brian continues to work behind the scenes. “That show has always focused on community and family, and I don’t feel like I’ve lost that. I’m firmly present in my journey, moving forward without dwelling on the past,” she concluded.
