Chris Evans Speaks on His Absence from Avengers: Doomsday
In a heartfelt moment for fans, Chris Evans has finally addressed why he won’t be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday. As a significant figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Chris Evans’ portrayal of Captain America has left an indelible mark, alongside the likes of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. While Downey Jr. is set to return as Doctor Doom in this upcoming installment, Evans has previously indicated that his chapter as Steve Rogers has ended.
During a recent interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley about his new film, Materialists, Evans candidly shared his emotions regarding this absence. He expressed a sense of sadness, revealing that not being part of the evolving story crafted by the Russo Brothersâ€â€the directors of his Captain America franchiseâ€â€has weighed on him. He explained that while he’s excited for what’s to come in Avengers: Doomsday, it’s bittersweet to feel excluded from the reunion with his MCU family.
ScreenRant: Chris, what’s the over under on how many times you’ve been asked about Steve Rogers today?
Chris Evans: You know what? It hasn’t really happened. You might be the first.
ScreenRant: I know you’re not going to confirm or deny anything with Avengers related, but I will ask now that Downey and The Russos are coming back, as friends outside of colleagues, have you talked to them since they signed the dotted line?
Chris Evans: Yeah, I talk to them all the time. It’s where Pedro is right now. I mean, it’s sad to be away. It’s sad to not be back with the band, but I’m sure they’re doing something incredible, and I’m sure it’s going to be that much harder when it comes out and you feel like you weren’t invited to the party.
Missing the Marvel Connection
Despite Evan’s consistent messaging about moving on from the role, the nostalgia and camaraderie he has for his fellow cast members remain palpable. Although Marvel has remained mum on any potential return for Evans in the upcoming Avengers installments, there have been whispers suggesting he might work alongside Peggy Carter actress Hayley Atwell. Yet, as Evans’ recent comments suggest, it seems unlikely that he will grace the screen in Avengers: Doomsday.
Evans conveyed a genuine sense of sadness over missing out on the experience. He routinely connects with the Russo Brothers, Downey Jr., and other MCU stars. He emphasized that the emotional impact of not participating would hit him hardest when he finally views the film and experiences the excitement of the fansâ€â€without being part of the festivities.
This absence carries even more weight considering Evans recently reprised his role as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine. Fans had hoped this would signal his return to the role of Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday, but his latest sentiments indicate otherwise. The disappointment is clear, especially given that fans, including myself, expected to see his beloved character once more.
As Evans reflects on his time away from the franchise he helped build, many of us hope that Marvel reconsiders for future projects, particularly Avengers: Secret Wars, where a reunion with Robert Downey Jr. would undoubtedly be a momentous occasion.
Materialists hits theaters on June 13.
As we await the release of Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026, the sense of longing for the Marvel family is palpable. The movie is filled with beloved characters, and as they face a new threat in the form of Doctor Doom, the emotional connections built over the years make Evans’ absence that much more noticeable. For now, fans can only hope that we’ll see him in future projects, uniting once again with his Marvel family for another unforgettable cinematic experience.
