WARNING: This article features MAJOR SPOILERS from The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has ushered in a new era with the introduction of Marvel Comics’ iconic team in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Directed by Matt Shakman, this film not only marks the debut of Marvel’s First Family in the MCU but also successfully sets the stage for Phase 6 of The Multiverse Saga.
As is typical of MCU films, the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps has ignited fervor amongst fans and critics alike. Fast forward four years in the storyline, and Sue Storm encounters a mysterious man cloaked in green, who possesses a mask that’s somewhat familiar. This pivotal moment gifts fans their first tantalizing glimpse of Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom.
In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Shakman divulged more about the post-credits scene. He confirmed that while the Russo brothers directed this sequence, they had explored numerous variations during development. Shakman expressed excitement about how the scene evolved to its current form:
“Yeah, that is what Sylvester called that cue. The Russos directed that on the set of Avengers: Doomsday. It’s not something that I directed, but we’ve always known that kind of tease would be part of the credits for this movie because there’s a lot to set up. That scene evolved over the years, and we had many different versions of how that could happen. And this one is really fun.”
Currently, Avengers: Doomsday is in production, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps plays a crucial role in linking the beloved characters to future events. Doctor Doom’s fleeting appearance is more than just an Easter egg; it signals monumental shifts to come in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
The Path to Avengers: Doomsday
While Doctor Doom takes center stage as a key figure in the MCU, Shakman’s insights reveal the care with which Marvel is crafting the character’s introduction. This brief yet powerful moment foreshadows the chaos that ensues when Doctor Doom enters Franklin Richards’ life, suggesting tremendous stakes for our heroes.
The involvement of the Russo brothers adds another layer of authenticity and anticipation for Avengers: Doomsday. Their established relationships with these characters hint that the integration of Doctor Doom will be organic and impactful, especially when considering the rich history between Doom and the Fantastic Four.
The Legacy of Doctor Doom in the MCU
The careful placement of Doctor Doom in The Fantastic Four: First Steps has sparked discussions about their storied rivalry from the comics. The brief glimpse of Doom not only honors the character’s legacy but sets the foundation for a deeper narrative that will unfold in future films.
With the film already making waves, the anticipation for the characters’ return in Avengers: Doomsday only intensifies. Fans eagerly await how this iconic rivalry will be brought to life on the silver screen.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now playing in theaters, enriching the MCU landscape as we prepare for the chaos and excitement that lies ahead.
