James Gunn Reveals Exciting Updates on the DC Universe

James Gunn has provided an intriguing update on the DC Universe, revealing new details about 15 potential projects in Chapter 1 titled “Gods and Monsters.” Following the forthcoming release of Gunn’s Superman film, excitement builds as multiple films and series are set to expand the DC Studios franchise.

Recently, Gunn appeared on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast with host Josh Horowitz, where he addressed updates on the anticipated slate. This conversation encompassed key characters like Batman and Wonder Woman, and offered insights into projects nearing completion.

One interesting moment occurred when Gunn was quizzed about the rumored spinoff shows for Jimmy Olsen and Mister Terrific. His reaction hinted at the complexities of navigating gossip while still emphasizing what is officially confirmed. Gunn stated:

Can we talk about the things that are out there that I’ve actually said, as opposed to the whispers online that are sometimes made up and sometimes real?

In discussing The Batman 2, Gunn expressed enthusiasm for the script penned by Matt Reeves, affirming it’s on track for its October 2027 release. He said:

For sure, we’re headed in the right direction. So there’s some things we still got to work out, but it’s headed in the right direction.

When it comes to The Brave and The Bold, the upcoming Batman film, Horowitz noted that it is still in the writing stage. Gunn’s comment on potentially releasing The Batman 2 and The Brave and The Bold in the same year was clear: “Probably not. Probably not the same calendar year.”

Gunn remained coy on whether The Brave and The Bold would mark the DCU’s Batman’s first on-screen appearance, confirming that casting is yet to begin. However, he did acknowledge fan interest in Alan Ritchson as a possible Batman, commenting:

Do I ever think about it? Sure. There’s people out there I think about, but let’s see [when] the script comes in. It’s not the furthest along thing. I mean, we have things that are much much further along than The Brave and The Bold.

Still on the topic of continuity within the DCU, updates regarding Peacemaker season 2 were shared. Gunn emphasized the strong connections between the HBO Max series and Superman. With the second season debuting in August, he explained:

Peacemaker [season] 2 is a direct follow-up to Superman. We have so many characters from [Superman]. Rick Flag is in it, Hawkgirl, Maxwell Lord, Guy Gardner. It’s the direct follow-up to Superman and very R-rated.

Gunn was also asked about the Supergirl movie as it gears up for Milly Alcock’s debut. The conversation then shifted to Jason Momoa’s Lobo, which elicited an enthusiastic response from Gunn: “Lobo is so frickin’ awesome. Jason Momoa is so… Oh my god!”

As for the Lanterns project, Gunn described it positively as “great,” before sharing that the Clayface movie is set to start production soon:

This is a total horror movie. It could be like a Blumhouse big-budget horror film. But it’s within the DCU, which I think is a cool thing to do.

In response to inquiries about Wonder Woman’s script, Gunn confirmed that work is indeed underway, providing assurance that this iteration will feel distinct from what fans have previously seen with Gal Gadot:

Very, yes. I’m excited about Wonder Woman right now.

Interestingly, when asked about the return of the Flash and Aquaman characters, Gunn noted these might still be a ways off, saying, “I wouldn’t say the next two years for either of those characters.”

Touching on The Authority movie, originally announced in January 2023, Gunn conceded that it has been a challenging endeavor and confirmed that the writer has since been reassigned to a different, confidential project.

I moved the writer on to another project in the DCU that I think he’s really killing right now.

Gunn also provided updates on Swamp Thing. Although James Mangold has yet to deliver a script due to his busy schedule, Gunn reassured fans that conversations are ongoing.

The podcast conversation also wandered towards Sgt. Rock, an endeavor that once appeared on the verge of realization with Daniel Craig. When asked if he’s excited about its potential comeback, Gunn replied with enthusiasm, though clarifying the previous director Luca Guadagnino is no longer attached.
