As the excitement builds for the new Superman movie, fans are eagerly anticipating James Gunn’s unique take on the iconic character. This film marks Gunn’s foray into the DC Universe after completing his beloved Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy at Marvel. However, a surprising twist has emerged: the film will be missing a controversial scene that did not sit well with test audiences.
Expectations are high, and early updates hint at a familiar cast of characters  Superman, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor  taking center stage. Yet, a fan-favorite also features prominently in promotional materials: Krypto, Superman’s loyal Superdog. The decision to cut a scene involving Krypto has made headlines, particularly due to its unsettling nature.
In an interview with Jake’s Takes, Superman‘s Engineer star MarÃÂa Gabriela de FarÃÂa and Eve Teschmacher actress Sara Sampaio revealed that a scene featuring Ultraman punching Krypto was ultimately discarded due to its negative reception in test screenings.
Interviewer: There’s a scene where you’re not the kindest to Krypto, and out loud I heard someone go, “Oh, hell no.”
MarÃÂa Gabriela de FarÃÂa: Oh, that’s awesome.
Sara Sampaio: They actually cut a worse scene from…
MarÃÂa Gabriela de FarÃÂa: That’s right. That’s right.
Sara Sampaio: Me and Nick [Hoult] were a little bit pissed about it, but it’s okay.
Interviewer: Did this go full John Wick?
MarÃÂa Gabriela de FarÃÂa: Oh, no…
Interviewer: What did… Now you have to tell. What did they cut?
Sara Sampaio: Well, they cut Ultraman punching Krypto. Because, apparently, it did really bad in the test screening.
The Deleted Scene’s Impact
Krypto Will Remain in Action
Known for his impactful storytelling, James Gunn’s previous works often tread a fine line with serious themes. Movies like John Wick have changed audience perceptions about violence, especially towards animals. In this context, Ultraman striking Krypto, while fitting for a villain, may have felt excessive to viewers.
The cut scene itself might not drastically affect the narrative. As FarÃÂa noted, Krypto still plays a vital role in various action sequences throughout the film. Though audiences won’t see Krypto being harmed, his presence is assured in the film’s climactic moments.
Thoughts on the Cut Scene
Personally, I’m relieved that the Ultraman-Krypto scene was excised. While it may not have detracted significantly from the overall story, peacefully coexisting with fans’ emotions is essential for films of this caliber. The decision to cut a moment that could distress viewers resonates positively in an age where entertainment should offer both excitement and comfort.
